Viennese woman shows a big heart

Who hasn’t felt that way? You do a lot of things in life that bring “nothing” or seem worthless or unnecessary to others, and yet the time could be “used better for something else”… But you simply need certain things in life for your soul, and it’s good that not everything has to be looked at so rationally and that you’re allowed to have something for your heart, too. That’s what makes life worth living and beautiful, isn’t it?

In this farm story I would like to write about a person who sacrifices a great deal of time and love to care for and look after animals, and lately has also invested a lot of patience, love and time to save little bunny lives.

Almost a week ago Lea became a bunny mum and everything seemed to be fine. The rabbit hutch was locked so that nobody would reach into the little nest, and yet after two days she put the first babies out and they froze.

She also didn’t seem to care for the others anymore, and so my intern from Vienna – Katharina – took them into her care and brought them into the house. Now someone might say, making such a fuss over the little bunnies and all that effort. Yes, that’s true, and yet it isn’t. Who decides what is valuable and what isn’t? “I like animals and it’s worth a try” – with these positive words Katharina and our daughter got stuck in, and alongside the daily, heavy work on the farm they fed the little rascals exactly according to plan; every few hours it’s necessary. Katharina’s friend from Schönbrunn Zoo recommends goat’s milk for rearing, and they really tolerate it well.

It’s a very elaborate process—they are now being fed with a small syringe, weighed first so we can monitor their weight, and then put back on the scales after drinking.

Packed into a small box, wrapped in cotton wool, they sleep and move about lively. They are no longer naked, already have a tiny bit of fur, and in the next few days, if they stay healthy, they will open their eyes.

We wish the little ones continued good growth, and the two foster mums a bit more stamina until the bunny babies can feed themselves, and many happy moments.

Little joys are what life is made of. Let’s look for small things that make life beautiful and bring us joy despite all the difficulties and stones that are put in our way. And that are useless to others :-) I wish you that from the bottom of my heart.
