Plenty of space for our cows
Our animals are part of everyday life at the Zittrauerhof and live in different barns tailored to their needs. Our free-stall barn for cattle was newly built in 2018 and offers the cows plenty of space and freedom of movement. Spacious cubicles, lots of daylight and good air circulation ensure a pleasant barn climate.
At the feeding places, our cattle can eat their feed in peace; in the modern milking parlour, the dairy cows are milked twice a day. Our horses and goats live very close by in a lovingly renovated stone barn building that is around 200 years old.
Many different cattle breeds
Anyone who visits our cowshed during their farm holiday in Bad Hofgastein will discover an amazing variety. At the Zittrauerhof, the cattle breeds Holstein, Fleckvieh, Jersey, Brown Swiss and Red Friesian live here – each with its own look and special characteristics.
This variety makes our cattle barn especially diverse and gives guests young and old an authentic insight into agriculture. Because our cows are not a tourist attraction, but an important part of our actively run farm in the Gastein Valley.
From pasture to barn
Our cattle have the option of going outside independently from the barn. In winter, they generally have this freedom as well – except when the ground is icy or particularly muddy.
From mid-March, our dairy cows are allowed back onto the short-grass pasture for a few hours at a time and enjoy the first fresh grasses there. In summer, some of our animals move further up to the Zittraueralm. This is how nature, the seasons and the weather shape everyday life on our farm and make a farm holiday in the Gastein Valley especially authentic.
Our calves
Right next to the modern free-stall barn for cattle is our old barn with the calving pens and calves. Depending on age and size, the young animals are housed in suitable pens and are cared for by us attentively and lovingly.
For guests, the calves are of course especially exciting to watch. They are just as much a part of real farm life as our fully grown dairy cows and show that farming at the Zittrauerhof in Bad Hofgastein is alive all year round. With a bit of luck, you might even discover animal offspring during your holiday.
The cow cinema
A special experience during your farm holiday in Bad Hofgastein is our so-called “cow cinema”. From Monday to Friday, guests can watch the evening milking, provided our dairy cows are currently in the valley and not up on the Zittraueralm.
From the viewing area, you can watch how the cows are milked in our modern milking parlour. Children in particular love to follow what’s happening – and that’s why they gave this special place its affectionate name. This turns the daily work routine into an authentic insight into real farm life in SalzburgerLand.
