Yes, we are on the alm with our animals in summer and run a small alm refreshment stand. Typical products such as Brettljause are offered from Tuesday to Sunday.

Alpine delights and authentic mountain life at 1,872 meters
High above the Gastein Valley lies our rustic Zittraueralm on the Stubnerkogel in Bad Gastein. At 1,872 meters above sea level, you can expect magnificent views of the Gastein mountains, cold drinks, hearty snacks, and homemade delicacies such as Pofesen and Apfelradl.
The Zittraueralm has belonged to our farm for generations and is not only a beautiful destination for hikers in summer, but also an important part of our farming. Many of our animals spend their summer months here in the heart of the Salzburg mountains.
Mountain life with tradition and passion
Even as a child, Matthias Jr. was out and about on the Zittraueralm with his grandpa, helping to look after the animals. The enthusiasm for mountain life has remained: today, he looks after the animals on our alpine pasture with great passion during the summer.
Around 25 cows are milked daily on the Zittraueralm. Together with the herdsman, young cattle, horses, and goats are also cared for. Every two days or so, the fresh milk comes down from the mountain to the Zittrauerhof in the valley – keeping the farm and the alpine pasture closely connected.
Summer retreat for our animals
During the summer months, cows and heifers, our Noriker horses, and goats spend their time on the high-altitude Zittraueralm. Fresh mountain air, alpine meadows, and plenty of exercise are part of our animals’ daily lives here.
For guests of the Zittrauerhof, a visit to our own alpine pasture is a particularly wonderful way to continue experiencing your farm holiday in the Gastein Valley high up in the mountains and to gain an insight into traditional alpine farming in SalzburgerLand.
Culinary delights on the Zittraueralm
A stop for refreshments tastes particularly good after a hike. In our small alpine snack bar, we serve cold drinks, ‘Brettljausen’ (snack platters), and other delicacies. These are accompanied by high-quality products from our own production and the region.
Our homemade Pofesen and Apfelradl are particularly popular – best enjoyed with a view over the mountains around Bad Gastein. Hiking, mountain life, and regional enjoyment naturally go hand in hand when visiting the Zittraueralm.
Hiking to the Zittraueralm
Many paths lead to us on the mountain. You can reach the Zittraueralm particularly comfortably from the middle station of the Stubnerkogel cable car. From there, the walking time is only about 20 minutes.
Walking times to the Zittraueralm:
- Stubnerkogel middle station: approx. 20 minutes
- Stubnerkogel mountain station: approx. 90 minutes
- Böckstein: approx. 150 minutes
If you stick to the forest roads, you can also reach the Zittraueralm with a stroller with larger tires. This makes an excursion to our alpine pasture suitable for families spending their summer holiday in the Gastein Valley.
From the farm up to our alpine pasture
The Zittraueralm on the Stubnerkogel is closely linked to life on our Zittrauerhof in Bad Hofgastein. While calves, small animals, and ponies stay on the farm all year round, many of our larger animals spend the summer high up on the alpine pasture.
For our holiday guests, a visit combines two special sides of a farm holiday in Bad Hofgastein: daily farm life in the valley and traditional alpine farming high above the Gastein Valley.
Opening hours of the Zittraueralm
The Zittraueralm is managed from mid-June to mid-September – depending on the weather.
Opening hours:
Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Closed on Mondays
Even on closing days, thirsty hikers will find drinks in the fountain.
