What’s that lying on the pasture?

Right now there’s quite a lot going on in our children’s barn at Zittrauerhof! In February the offspring of our dear Molly, at Easter our little bunnies, and now the next birth was already on the way. The wonders of this world are simply breathtaking.

Yesterday was the day that our dear Fiona – Flecky’s daughter – gave birth to twins right in the middle of the pasture.

This type of goat descends from the bezoar goat, which used to live in Central and Southern Europe, Western and Central Asia, and in North Africa. They are very robust animals and through their body structure optimally adapted to life in the mountains.

And today came the second surprise: right in the morning Flecky brought her kid into the world, and right after birth it stood up and wobbled. The photos were taken one hour after birth :-)

As you can also see very well in the photos, many goat breeds are among the horn bearers. But the horns are by no means limited only to the male animals. Because the nanny goat also wears thin, short horns that are slightly curved. The billy goat, on the other hand, shows off with his strong, heavily backward-curved horns that can grow up to one meter long.

Our goats find their feed on the pasture themselves. In the morning and in the evening they get a little bit of hay and hard bread as a treat. In winter they are sometimes led outside as well, but they are fed only in the barn with hay, now and then carrots, and also now and then hard bread. Fresh water must always be available – whether on the pasture or in the barn.
