Small but mighty!

A few months ago, we bought the beautiful Shetland tiger stallion from the breeding farm of Rupert Schartner from St. Johann-Alpendorf. Amigo – we kept the name – is 1 m tall and 5 years old. Our mares were a little restless at first when Amigo also looked out of a stall and neighed, but in the meantime, they have gotten a bit used to the new situation.

For those who don’t keep horses, the question probably arises: Why do you need a stallion on a farm when there are stallion stations? Currently, we have two Noriker breeding mares that need to be bred. It proves practical and time-saving because, with Amigo’s help, the mares can be detected to be in heat more quickly. Otherwise, you would have to drive the mare to the Noriker stallion every time, which is quite time-consuming. So, we only drive to the breeding stallion when the horses are in heat and can be bred.

In addition, Amigo will now occasionally have female visitors; the first Shetland pony mare has been with him for a few days, and when Kria’s foal, our Icelandic mare, is a bit older, Amigo will join them in the pasture too.

Today, we also took the Noriker mares to the pasture for the first time and hope that another snowfall into the valley won’t cause changes.
