When spring comes

Some of you may have already noticed the sounds and smells of the farming spring, because it seems that spring will soon arrive in its full glory in the beautiful Gasteinertal! And so it happens here at Zittrauerhof that the work outside increases day by day and everything awakens from its winter rest (of course there is plenty to do in winter too, but you really notice the extra work from spring onwards ;) ).

And so the men are out and about more often with the tractors to carry out the upcoming work in the fields.

We often hear how beautifully green our meadows in the valley are and how lush and rich they look. We think so too! But how this beautiful green comes about may not please every sensitive nose… Because in spring the time of slurry begins again. This is spread on the meadows and fields to fertilize the soil and maintain the rich green tone of the meadows. This spring scent may not convince every nose, but it is very important for our daily farm work!

The meadows are not only fertilized to nourish them, but cleaning work is also due. Once the snow has melted, quite a few things appear on the meadows. Besides sticks and branches carried by the wind, there is also a lot of rubbish, broken glass, dog bags and plastic that must be removed! A laborious and time-consuming job, but it simply has to be done.

And then there are also particularly lovely spring tasks here on the farm. I have a lot of fun digging over the beds and planting the first plants so that the scented garden and the many beds on the farm can wear their colorful dress again this year! And when you’re already working around the house and garden anyway, you can tidy up here too and clear away branches. Once the tidying, planting and care work is finished, there is now also time for decorating – especially before Easter you really long for that.

Spring shows its most beautiful moments especially in the barn. Because as soon as the weather is nice, our offspring are also allowed to leave their own four walls for the first time and discover the big world outside. So when the first rays of sunshine appear at spring temperatures, you can see our youngest farm residents romping across the fields – a joy every year!!!

The doe Magret also had her young a few days ago and we are already looking forward to when the little ones come out and show themselves. I will report to you soon about the next spring tasks.
