Grandpa Hias is great!

Today I want to introduce you once again to a member of the Zittrauerhof. It’s about “Grandpa Hias”, my father-in-law. Formerly the owner of the farm himself, he still supports us today wherever he can. He is a farmer, mountain pasture grandpa and grandpa with heart and soul, and lives for the work on the farm.

But this time it’s not meant to be about “Grandpa and work”. Because much more important is “Grandpa and his grandchildren“, because everyone here on the farm knows the picture of Hias being surrounded by his grandchildren or having them with him.

For our children and nephews, Hias isn’t just a grandpa; he is a good companion and mentor. He brings them closer to life on the farm in the past and today, and is there for them when they have joys or worries, or simply feel like sharing.
When he tells stories or explains things, you can watch curious children’s eyes. In a way, he is a teacher too. From him, the children learn how many tasks are done on the farm or up on the mountain pasture, and what you have to pay attention to so that all the animals on the farm are well and no machine breaks down.

His grandchildren love spending time with their Grandpa Hias—whether it’s playing cards, farm work, or just fooling around—but each of the children looks forward most of all to the time together up on the mountain pasture. When Grandpa Hias spends the summer months up on the mountain pasture, each of the grandchildren is allowed to sleep over with him once, and of course help out. But this time also takes a bit of planning before everything gets going. Because even if all the children would love to be up on the mountain pasture together, they take turns, so that Grandpa Hias always has a helping hand by his side and not too many children are up there at once. Each child knows exactly when what needs to be done. And even if Grandpa can be very strict, the time with him is always something special and will stay in the children’s minds.

Hias has a heart of gold and brings the children especially great joy with unexpected gifts…. And every now and then it happens that his grandchildren get a donkey as a thank-you or little gesture, or suddenly there’s a children’s moped on the farm, or he brings home a few football stickers. Because his grandchildren are the greatest thing for him, just as he is for his grandchildren.
