Saying goodbye ..

• Selling animals is part of being a farmer – true.
• It’s part of our job – true.
• We earn our money with it – true.
• But still, saying goodbye is especially hard with some animals, and your heart starts to cry a little.

That’s how it is with our Kria – the 18-year-old Icelandic mare – here on our farm. She has been suffering from “heaves” since last winter and only recovers when it turns green outside again. On advice, we have now started looking for a place by the sea and, thanks to Mrs Haussmann from the animal welfare association On the Way to Happiness, we have found one.

Kria lived with us at Zittrauerhof for several years; we watched her grow up, and every farm resident and holiday guest can remember lovely moments with our Icelandic mare. Kria has given our farm so much that is positive and has always made children’s eyes and hearts laugh!

We would love to keep her and continue to care for her, but unfortunately, in our harsh winter climate this is only possible with constant medication and special feeding.

Wednesday was the day Kria set off on her way to northern Germany. But we are very happy that she can spend her remaining years at Britta’s Ranch, be among horses, and be cared for and looked after by horse lovers. She will live there among horses with similar illnesses and be cared for exactly according to her needs. Maybe in the next few days we’ll even see a photo or two of her, or get an occasional update on Kria’s life in the far north of Germany. We’re already looking forward to that.
