Molly – In Loving Memory

That animals are born on the farm, raised, and sometimes sold and slaughtered, is part of farm life. With some animals, you develop a special bond; you become particularly attached to them. It’s then much like when a family has a house cat or a dog that accompanies them daily, gives love, and is simply something truly “special.” One of these animals, who had such a special soul, was our Spectacled Sheep Molly. Three years ago, she came to our farm as a Christmas gift for our children – she was so tame, sweet, and good-natured, and also a special comforter and playmate for our guests.

My husband Matthias was present at her births every year, and her lambs, now grown into beautiful sheep, have inherited her character.

This year, unfortunately, the birth was not under a good star. Despite the help of Matthias and our vet Dr. Christ, she passed away yesterday, and the lamb a few hours after birth. A newborn calf also had an intestinal torsion and could not be saved.

Grandpa always says in such cases that it’s “a rough road despite everything.” He is right, yet it was very sad for us because Molly was one of our dearest farm animals and a loyal companion to farm life.

We already miss Molly today, and I was especially happy when I received drawings and photos from dear guest children from last week, and we were still lucky enough to take some nice walks with her.

Let’s hope that we will have more luck in the stable again soon and that our animals can stay healthy.
